THANKFUL, GRATEFUL, BLESSED!

As the sun made its way toward the western sky on the Tuesday before turkey day, the final Thanksgiving boxes and birds were delivered throughout Sacred Heart Southern Missions. The tally, pending final paperwork, was 1,523—exceeding last year’s total!

Planning for this year’s feast began in late summer. The increase in the cost of food was a concern, but the many willing hearts and hands of our partners in mission helped us accomplish our Thanksgiving goals.

Once again, new stops were added to our schedule of deliveries, making the Thanksgiving holiday a little brighter for those who struggle in northwest Mississippi communities. Crisscrossing our five-county, 2,500-square-mile service area, staff and volunteers delivered Thanksgiving boxes to 17 low-income neighborhoods and apartment complexes, in addition to those distributed through our social service offices.

Thanksgiving

The most memorable and heart-warming aspects of our “tale of many turkeys,” were the responses we received from the grateful recipients as they received Thanksgiving boxes, complete with turkeys or chickens and a variety of traditional staples for a holiday meal.

“Can I give you a hug,” asked the elderly woman as she hugged our volunteers and staff. “This is so wonderful, thank you so much for doing this for us.” Cheryl was just one of the grateful seniors who received a box during our neighborhood distributions.

The responses were the same, no matter the location. “Goodness! You have no idea how much this is helping me,” Laura exclaimed, overjoyed with the contents of her box. “I couldn’t get out to get this food, much less afford to pay for it.”

Arthur, who is deaf, smiled wide as he received his box. “Thank you,” he signed. Cupping his hands, he made a heart and brought it to his chest in a display of sincere appreciation.

There was so much joy delivered this Thanksgiving. To see the smiles, to hear laughter, to receive the hugs, all of those helped make this happen should know that they brightened the lives of so many families.
